Does st john's wort work to alleviate depressin and are there any significant side effects?

Question:

Answers:
I have never had a good effect with it but I have beeen told that if you do use it, use a high quality hypericum extract. Use of St. John's Wort makes you more susceptible to the damaging effects of the sun. Not to be taken with other depressants such as Prozac, etc. Much study of this plant has been done in Germany and it has been used with some success for mild depression.

Other Answers:
it will make birth control pills not work

It works to curb certain symtoms, but if you or someone you know is actually "depressed" they should seek medical attention from some type of professional care provider, i.e. shaman, spiritual healer, medical doctor, family practitioner, psychologist. herbs are believed by certain cultures to help us but only when they are prescribed by those healers.

It can make your other medicines NOT work, like birth control pills (which someone else said) or if you take diabetes medicine etc.

My doc said its worthless, but my former doc said if I wasn't on BC pills that it might be worth a try.

yes, it works, but better with combination of other herbs, no or almost no side effects. www.nativeremedies.com

St Johns Wort is prescribed by physicians in many other countries because of it's effectiveness in helping mild clinical depression. It works the same as many well knowned antidepressants,by altering the level of a neurotransmitter called serotonin ,secreted in our brains.

I don't recommend it--I think there are far more effective ways to deal with mild depression. The hard data is mixed with some herbalists claiming it's the best thing since pre-sliced bread and others saying it's completely useless.

Who mentioned sun sensitivity? You're exactly right. One of my clients had been taking SJW for about 4 months when she got a 2nd degree burn between 8 and 10 a.m.
