The technical name for a fart is 'flatus' and flatus is produced as a result of bacterial activity in the large intestine. These bacteria ferment undigested food, releasing nitrogen, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, methane and hydrogen sulphide.The last three are produced in quite small amounts but hydrogen sulphide gas is famous for its smell of bad eggs, even in small quantities.
