what's the best remedy for low back pain?

Hi Oliveoil. Is oleic acid your nickname? (oleic acid is the most abundant fat in olive oil.)
The simple but only correct answer to your question is to find and treat the cause of the low back pain.
There are many, many causes of this type of problem. Most are not serious in terms of being life threatening, but all can be quality of life threatening.
Low back pain can have mechanical causes such as spinal subluxations, short leg syndromes, postural imbalances, etc. It can also be pain referred to the back from various organs such as the kidneys, reproductive organs or intestines. Osteoporosis is a serious cause of backpain that can result in spinal fractures. Inflammatory conditions are possible too. Cancers, disc herniations, spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal), and degenerative conditions of the spine are also possible.
What has your family chiropractor told you? If you have not seen one, now is the time. Find the cause and treat the cause because pain is merely a message that something is wrong. Don't treat the pain. Treat the cause of the pain.
Good luck!

Just to be sure, you may want to visit a physician first to be sure you don't have any actual medically-related problems causing this pain.
Things that may help: A heating pad, icy hot type of rubbing gel or patch, certain exercises (ask a doctor or read up on these), good posture, proper rest. Also, many things are helped by drinking LOTS of water, because you are hydrating (lubricating and expanding) your cells. Are you standing all day or on your feet a lot? Maybe using a stool or special shock absorbing rug can help.
Take care. Hope you get lots of good answers.
there can be a lot of reasons for this, improper seating position, kidney stones, urinary track infection, etc. to relieve the pain you can drink pain killers but these are only temporary, you have to know the root cause of the problem so you can be treated the right way.
In my opinion, most back pain is caused by a muscle inbalance between the muscles of the back and the muscles in the abdomen. basically, its weakness in either that can cause back pain. So the best remedy for back pain is flexing your abdomenal muscles (if your abdomenal muscles are weak) or flexing your lower back musc;es (if your lower back muscles are weak).
So try it, do sit ups, or while your sitting in a chair sit up straight and flex your abdomenal muscles. Contrastingly, if your back muscles are weak, stand up straight and then bend over and try to touch your toes (don't strain too much) and then return to an erect position.
This is highly anectodal, as it works for me. However, if you are overweight, the long term remedy is to lose that weight!
I agree with theonlyrealj's answer. Weak abdominal muscles are a major cause for lower-back pain. Without getting into too much detail, it has to do with the position of the spine in relation to your body weight.
Do your crunches to strengthen your abdominal muscles. Crunches are similar to sit-ups, but you lift your shoulders and butt off the ground at the same time.
You don't need six-pack abs to get rid of the pain, just stronger muscles.
Also, as mentioned by others, check with a doctor first to make sure there isn't some other medical problem going on.
