do yo think people have the right to die ifthey are in chronic pain?

Question:

Answers:
Oh, PLEASE. "God will help you!" I'm still waiting.

I was involved in three car smashes in the space of four years. Each time I was hit from behind by another driver - two of these three were hit-and-run. I now suffer pain, day and night, including chronic migraines and sometimes, agony so bad that I literally cannot think. I have fibromyalgia, which is chronic incurable pain. I had to give up ballroom dancing, martial arts, horseriding and more. I can't even do grocery shopping anymore and have had a disabled parking permit since I was around 24 years old. A good night's sleep doesn't help, because when you have fibro, there's no such thing as a "good night's sleep". The pain is such that proper sleep - and often, ANY sleep - is impossible.

Interestingly, I was a devout born-again Christian at the time of the first two accidents. Jesus didn't help me.

To give you an idea of what fibromyalgia is like, have you ever been in a car smash and when you woke up the next day, you could barely move? Or have you ever had a really bad flu, so bad that every part of your body ached and you couldn't think? That is what fibro is like - EVERY SINGLE DAY. I have days where the pain is so bad, I can barely move and even just lying down in bed is agonising. Two Panadeine Forte don't do a damned thing (that's 60mg codeine and 1000mg paracetamol).

Yet I know that there are people who suffer much more pain than I do, and I cannot believe that there are other people who would stop them from ending their own life. The pain I endure on a daily basis has been disabling and debilitating - I no longer have a social life and doing normal, everyday things is nearly impossible. Even standing in a queue is an almost insurmountable task for me. But I *can* stand, and I *can* walk. What about those who can't?

I am willing to put money on it, that the people who would have the "right to die" made illegal, have never truly experienced severe pain, and if they have, they haven't lived with it day in, day out, year in, year out.

Until these people live in agony every second of every day, year after year, with no cure and minimal relief (if any), they have NO RIGHT to stop another person from ending their own life.

Yes.

it should be their choice or if they are too ill to make a choice, the family should make the choice

That would be euthanasia, and yes, there comes a point where it is acceptable in my opinion.

i think that you should have the right to die if you damned well feel like it. your body, your choice. period.

Yes

They have the right to die, just not be killed.

I think they should have the right to choose but, so far, laws have stopped it at every turn. We are kinder to our suffering pets than what we allow people to be to themselves. If a person is rational enough to choose euthanasia, I feel they should not be denied that choice if they are terminal and suffering.

no suicide is the wrong answer. trust in god he will help you.

A person should always have the right to end their own life.

i dunno. i don't think anyone has that right. its a privelage god did not give us. i understand if your in so much pain and death seems a better option cause theres no hope for recovery.but still. its easier to make an opinion here then to go through it.to either see a loved one go through it yourself. hard to say really. but i still hold that death is not something god gave us as a tool to handle situations. i ain't a bible going church going person.i do believe in god, creator, higher power, what ever you may call him, and this is still something that is at our luxory, in my own belief anyway

Yes. I once had a migraine headache that was excruciating. I couldn't take pain medication because I was vomiting and couldn't keep it down. It was a horrible night and really gave me perspective on people who suffer from intractable pain.

everybody has the right to die, hell, we are all going to die anyways, but if you are asking if they have the right to have their pain and suffering ended and it's never going to go away till they die anyways then I would have to say yes, they do

The question really is, “who owns you?”

If others can decide whether you have the right to die or not, to that degree you are owned by someone else. If you truly own yourself then you can decide when you die for whatever reason you deem appropriate.

That is between them and their maker. I will say that my father has suffered from chronic pain for over thirty years and it has aged him and made him look extremely old for his age. There are alot of things and medicines out there for pain and I would hope that you research that and see what there is to help alleviate the pain.
I personally feel that that is a cop out, but that is easy for me to say because I have never lived in chronic pain. That's why I say no one can really answer your question. If it is meant as a way to justify an easy out I won't be the one to give it. I believe that everyone has trials given them that are extreme and made just for them, to see how we will endure with the knowledge that we have. Will we turn to God and endure what ever trials we are given. Or will we give up and become bitter at what life has dealt us. But if you don't have faith, or believe in a higher power then that kind of stuff probably doesn't matter. I deal with a pain in my heart daily and yes when it first happened I so didn't want to live, but I am learning the lesions and finding joy again, yet the pain is still there I just have learned to deal with it. It's a trial that you have to deal with and only you have the answers that you seek. Sorry..

I would like to add that sometimes it's not even about the person in pain, but the people around that person. Maybe it's learning to serve and help the person in pain. You know sometimes it is easier to just put someone out of their misery but there are lessions to be learned all the way around. In the end though I would never take someones right away to choose that if it was discussed in advance. Again it is a very individual thing that should be discussed within all families before something happens instead of after or when you're faced with it.

In the state of Oregon, there is The right to die law. The person choosing to exercise their rights when it comes to this law must of course be checked by several doctors and must prove that they will only deteriorate and not get better. Some states in the union still do not approve of this law and so people have been known to move to a state that sees this law, so that they have a choice. We put our beloved animals to sleep to prevent them from suffering so why should we make a human loved one suffer? The choice as with abortion, should be the right of an individual, given that of course they are of age, and of right mind to make the decision.

NO. GOD KNEW YOU THE BEFORE YOU WERE CREATED. ONLY HE HAS THE RIGHT TO TAKE A LIFE. THERE ARE DIFFERENT DEGREES TO CHRONIC PAIN. I MYSELF EXPERIENCE IT, TO A LESSER DEGREE THAT MANY I'M SURE. NONE THE LESS, THERE ARE WAYS, AND I DO BELIEVE IN MEDICATION, TO COPE. JESUS SUFFERED UNIMAGINABLE PAIN FOR US TO GIVE US ETERNAL LIFE. IF ONE TAKES THEIR OWN LIFE, THEY SHALL NEVER ENTER THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN. IT'S WORTH THE AGONY.
