Has anyone ever injured their gums and caused recession with an electric toothbrush?

Question:
I bought the Oral-B triumph and all of a sudden experienced irritation at my lower front teeth, and gum recession. I switched to Sonicare and it seems gentler and I haven't had any problems. Anyone else have a similar problem with electric toothbrushes?

Answers:
I'm a dentist.

Generally, dentists and hygienists recommend electric brushes to patients specifically because they are more gentle on the teeth and gums.

Sonicare is an excellent toothbrush. I use it myself and recommend it to my patients (whenever I talk about toothbrushes, that is). Oral-B has a longstanding history of making dental products, and it is very unlikely that they would manufacture a product that wasn't similarly gentle to the gums. You may have been using it wrong.

In either case, as long as you're happy with the Sonicare, stick with it.

Other Answers:
it is not because of electric or manual tooth brush. The main cause however can be due to brushing your teeth incorrectly. Brushing your teeth to hard, to fast or even using the wrong toothpaste can lead to serious tooth abrasion.if you brush too hard it cause tooth abrasion mostly near your gum line that makes your teeth sensitive in long run also it will cause gum recession.ask your dentist or hygienist to show you the correct way of brushing.

Gum recession and injury can be caused by both electric and the regular good old fashioned toothbrushes. The key to avoiding problems is to: move the toothbrush in the appropriate manner, a small circular motion at the gum-line, and: hold the brush so that the brushing edge is in the appropriate place and at the appropriate angle while brushing and: always use a "soft" bristled brush and: most importantly, see your dental hygienist regularly ( minimum of every six months) for your professional cleanings. Also seeing a dental professional of your choice regularly will help catch the presence of any problems in the early stages thus most likely avoiding any further pain or discomfort. Plus staying up to date on any new helpful dental findings is always a positive and can only lead to even better dental health in your future. Of course you can always stop by at your friendly neighborhood dental hygienists/dentists office for a handout which will hopefully clearly take you step by step through the correct manner in which to brush and floss your teeth.
