Are squats bad for you?

Question:
My friend, we'll call him poopy-head for the purposes of anonymity, says that doing squats are not good for you, particularly the knees. I say squats are the most important single weightlifting exercise you can do, especially for the lower body.

Answers:
Like I would know.

Other Answers:
You're right, but I'd add that squats benefit trunk strength too. Really there is no weight lifting exercise that is more important.

You can watch out for your knees through a sensible progressive program. You know, don't go squat a VW bug the first day out.

No because my brother said so.

Poopy-head is full of poop. There are three big exercises you should include your workout. Squats, deadlifts, and bench press. In fact, you get a damn good workout with just these three.

It really depends on what your trying to achieve with your workout. If your going for a powerlifting workout then Bench, deadlift, and squat are the three main lifts. But as you get older the wear and tear on your knees makes regular squating a bad lift because there are many others lifts that you can do to get the same affects. Such as leg press, hack squat, lunges, and leg extension.
