Other Answers:
Depends on where you want it done. Most often it is viewed as self expresion but others do it because everyone else is and it looks cool. There aren't too many cons to a piercing. They take a lot of work to keep clean to prevent infections, and if you ever take it out there will a visible mark in most cases.

Used to work in a tattoo parlor and helped the piercing specialist.

it could get infected..

Infections, as the others have said. My wife works in a drop-in clinic. They see one or two tongue piercings gone wrong every month. When they get infected, it can get really ugly. You can chip a tooth on the tongue stud, too. It gives you a slight speech defect.

The other biggie is people's attitudes. Most people over 40 are going to recoil at a piercing. This may be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on how you feel about people over 40. There is a reason a lot of retail stores don't allow their employees to wear piercings that show. (or at least make you take the stud out and put in a "keeper".) They know it offends a lot of people. It shouldn't; in an ideal world you would not be judged by your appearance. However, we don’t live in an ideal world, which is why politicians pay more for haircuts and clothes than, for instance, computer programmers and septic tank truck operators. So, ask yourself how important it is to hop on the latest fashion bandwagon, compared to how important it is to offend the general public.

Definitely infection, but if you take care of the piercing then the risks of that are slim. Some sites are more prone to irritation and infection than others. If you are going to get something pierced, read up on the procedure and aftercare to make sure that it's something you want to deal with.
I personally have 4 piercings besides the ears and I haven't had any infection problems, however, the nipple and the naval take a long time to heal thoroughly, so be sure it's what you want before going through with any piercings.
