Asthma is a condition in which a person has airways that are more reactive than is normal. Depending on severity, asthma is divided into the intermittent and persistent.

People with intermittent asthma are normal between attacks, but when exposed to airway irritants (such as smoke, animal dander, or other allergens), or when suffering from flu, develop bronchospasm due to the airway irritation, which results in the wheezing that most people identify as an asthmatic attack, or an acute asthma exacerbation.

People with persistent asthma have difficulties in breathing all the time, due to the increased reactivity of their airways. Such people, when exposed to airway irritants, may have worsening of their breathing, which would also be classified as an acute exacerbation.

acute asthma exacerbation can also be called "asthma attack", or anytime that your asthma worsens despite treatment. it is caused by narrowing of your airway due to triggers such as dust, pollen, etc. acute exacerbations can be treated with your rescue inhaler, or your fast-acting nebulizer medication, such as albuterol(ventolin), or Xopenex(levalbuterol).please see your physician and keep a close record of what seems to worsen your asthma symptoms, and you may be able to prevent an attack before it happens.
