What is the meaning of different kinds of piercings?

Question:
Do different kinds of piercings have different meanings? Like does it mean that your erotic if you have your tongue pierced? Or what does it mean to have your nipples pierced? Are there different meanings and if so, what are they, or do you know of a website that talks about the different meanings of piercings?

Answers:
I agree about piercings not having fixed meanings. I know there's that whole "he's got his left ear pierced so that means he's gay" thing that went around while I was in high school, but that's probably a load of crap. I think most piercings are done for one of two reasons 1) the person thinks they look cool and want to be trendy and 2) the person thinks it will piss someone off (like their parents) so they do it to make a statement. I myself have 11 piercings and most of them would be considered "trendy". I've got the belly button ring, the nose ring, and all sorts of ear piercings rather than the more "traditional" lobe piercings. I do have two tattoos and both of those have very special meanings for me. One is a Celtic heart on my hip (a "trendy" place to get a tat) for my Irish heritage, and then I have "I am strong" in Arabic on my forearm. I got that tattoo with my sister, who got a tattoo of her own design that same night, and after a period of my life that was really hard to get through. I got it to remind me that I can make it through anything because I'm strong.

Other Answers:
i don't think there is a fixed meaning for a particular type of piercing. the significance really depends on the individual, and his/her own reason for getting it. a popular conception, for instance, is that piercings on the nipples and privates show that the people are sexually adventurous, and this may be true for alot of people with such piercings, but isn't necessarily always the case. piercings, like tattoos, are an expression of the individual. meanwhile, do bear in mind that some piercings also have religious significance.
