How can you tell someone that you think they may be suffering from Tourette Syndrome instead of ADD?

Aside from the uninformed and rude answerer's here..

It can be difficult. I am a Mom of a child with Tourettes, and believe me, I DID NOT want to hear it! A teacher recommended that I take him and have an EEG performed. I did. This was a waste of time and money. This also wasted precious years of trying to figure out what was going on with our son, and incorrectly thinking that a teacher would know how to diagnose this disorder! I know now (but didn't then) that this test does not figure into the diagnosis for Tourettes.

Well meaning teachers, parents, school psychologists and others are not qualified to diagnose this disorder. The child's pediatrician needs to refer them to a Pediatric Neurologist. If there is not a Pediatric Neurologist nearby, a Neurologist will do.

HOW to tell them is another question! Assuming you are the child's teacher, I would simply say :

"Your child has displayed, on more than one occasion, what I believe to be Tourettes Syndrome. In order to find out for sure, or to rule it out, you will need to ask your child's pediatrician for a referral to a Pediatric Neurologist for observation".

When we went to the Pediatric Neurologist, we were not sure if the ticking would show up on the particular day and time of the appointment, so we video taped him on a day that his tics were very obvious. This was a great help in the diagnosis, besides the regular observation.

I hope this has helped. You may contact me through this site for any questions you may have. It is my mission to help!

BTW - it is not uncommon for Tourettes to be diagnosed with ADD. My son has Tourettes, ADHD and OCD.

Other Answers:
ADD and Tourette is NOTHING alike. ADD is when a person has problems focusing. tourettes is an involuntary spouting of random words or phrases. ADHD can seem similer but the person is in control of everything they do.

Just f***in tell them f**k you f**kin swear b**t**d f**k
No seriously it's no laughing matter why don't you get a leaflet on both and give them to the person break it gently that you feel they have more of Tourette symtoms

I'm not sure that I would "tell" them. I would be more likely to ask them if they themself have noticed some of the Tourettes-like stuff that you have been noticing.

I mean.let them notice the symptoms for themself first ?

And then bring up the fact that.what they have noticed might be caused by.this other thing that has symptoms like that.

If they can come to the conclusion as a result of their own discoveries..well.th. has a lot more power to it than someone simply telling you that they think you have one thing or another.

If you follow me ??

As you probably know..the sort of "impulsiveness" that comes from ADD is a lot different than the impulsiveness that's from Tourettes. So it should not be too hard for him to tell the difference.

Plus..he could have *both* ADD and Tourettes. That's a posibility as well.

Help him.figure it out for himself ??

That's how I would go at it.
