why do people yawn whenever someone else yawns?

Question: Whenever i see someone yawn i get the feeling in my chest like i want to yawn, and even if i stop myself I still have the feeling of a yawn. I just wanted to know why this is.

Answers:
I learned that it's a way of acclimating to your surroundings. Thus, when someone yawns, you do the same.
It doesn't really make any sense, but thats what a professor taught.

Well I found that if I write "yawn" on my hand, and glimpse it now and again, that makes me yawn too. I think we're all ready for a yawn all the time, but we forget about it.
