Crunches are a smaller version of situps. On crunchs you only go halfway foucusing on the upper abs. When you do a situp you sit all the way up working all of the abs.

your also meant to do crunches slower than situpssit ups put pressure on your lower back, it is not necessary to do a full sit up to work your abdominals, just raise your shoulder blades a few inches off of the ground until the upper half of your back is up, and that should do the trick.
