I would think "inpatient " means you are hospitalized ; and "outpatient" , means you are treated in a doctors office or clinic .
if you walk in there and demand service and insist that you just cannot wait , your head is about to explode, your thoughts are running in all directions, you have the answer of life, you will not take no for an answer, you will roll right around on the floor right here. your impatient.
if you are then told to leave right now, they will call security if you dont get up off that floor..your an outpatient.
They basically got it. Inpatient means you are checked into a facility just like a hospital. You are spending most if not all your time at the facility. It is a more intensive treatment option.
Outpatient is an attempt to get you functioning in the real world. You are surviving but just need a little extra help, or a lot depending but don;t need the seclusion of inpatient. You will see the same kinds of people because they all work both sides.
Psychologists,
psychiatrists,
therapists,
counselers,
social workers,
nurses. they all will be in inpatient and also out patient
Out patient means the person would probably receive some counseling, but released. In patient, they could get admitted to a mental health hospital or ward.

inpatient means you are committed in a psychiatric hospital . out patient means you go and see a psychiatrist and then go home.
If you are asking in relation to insurance coverage, it isn't that easy. Some "day care" or "night care" services may be covered under your inpatient benefit, even though you are not admitted to the hospital.
Check your plan document.
inpatient services - ward based. the staff look after patients who stay on the ward. Normally when the patient is in an acute state or in need of long term care, or rehab.
outpatient services - normally operate 9-5 and see patients (who live in the community) on a daily bases. May be a day centre where the patient stays all day, or clinics, where the patient has appointments, or a drop in clinic.
