what is c diff?

Question:

Answers:
Colostrum difficile bacteria. It is spead though contaminated fecal matter, and usually caused by high doses of IV antibiotics in hospitalized patients, which makes them more suseptible. wash your hands people!!

~you better wash those hands!! c-diff is highly contagious, and when a hospitalized pt has it they are put on whats called contact isolation. this means you dont touch the patient or anything in the room without gloves and a gown. when you remove your gloves, you ALWAYS wash your hands. In most hospitals they have alcohol based hand cleansers, which are wonderful, but unfortunatley c-diff is one of the only bacteria not killed by this .you must use soap and water with c-diff, and frequently nurses will leave notes in the room so the pts. families know this. and one more thing there is a saying, if you dont go into the hospital sick, you will get sick. and that is unfortunatley frequently true. They are called "Nosocomial Infections" infections aquired while in the hosp. like staph and c-diff and MRSA etc. it is due to the fact that so much is spread pt. to pt. and it has been proven that handwashing is the BEST way to stop the spread of infection. so yes, cdiff is aquired from long term iv abts, but it is also a highly contagious bacteria, that loves to pass itself around. youll see trends in the hospital, and sometimes you can almost pinpoint who wasnt carrying out proper infection control.

pregowtwins is absolutely correct. It's a particularly nasty bacteria. After being in hospital on a penicillin IV for a week, I was sent home, "cured". A week later, a C. Difficile.."infestation" is the best word I can think of.was diagnosed. I lost 30 lbs. and a month of work because of it. Stay out of hospitals if you can; they make you sick! ;-)

ok, look i worked in hospitals for a long time in housekeeping and as a secretary. Let's just say that c diff. well its sort of like peeing bright green out your behind. In response to one answer you got.. hospitals (as much as I hate healthcare), DO NOT MAKE YOU SICK! THAT'S JUST STRAIGHT UP DUMB!! People make people sick. Handwashing however has nothing to do with cdiff. Prolonged Intravenous (IV) Antibiotics allow this lovely bacteria to grow and what better place for bacteria to grow than in your INTESTINES! Now, there is an alternative to taking antibiotics (which by the way DO compromise your immune system if not taken EXACTLY AS PRESCRIBED! That's where all those bright yellow stickers that are on your Med bottle come in handy!) anywho the alternative. don't go to the hospital. Since I don't work on the surgical floor anymore I can finally tell all you boneheads out there. we DON'T WANT YOU TO COME IN UNLESS YOU ARE SICK! No, you can not rate your pain at a 12 on a scale of 1-10 because 10 means you are darn near DEAD! No, after a stomach surgery we will not bend the rules about what you can eat. EVEN FOR YOU! YOU ARE NOT SPECIAL. If you are sick come to the hospital you are the people we want to have as patients,STOP coming to the EMERGENCY ROOM to find out if your pregnant! If you want a pregnancy test GO TO WALGREENS AND PAY $15 dollars like the rest of america. Better yet DON'T HAVE SEX! Now, SEX, that can kill ya! So STOP please just STOP knowing more than the doctors and nurses who all went to some kind of Medical school, just do what they tell you to do and maybe, just maybe we'll stop the next Cdiff.

Prego. WHERE DID I SAY HANDWASHING IS A BAD IDEA? AND WHAT PART OF MY ANSWER MADE YOU THINK I WAS ASKING YOU A QUESTION? JUST CURIOUS. BY THE BY ITS CORDOG! DON'T BE A LAZY OTHER END!

As others have said, it's a bacterial infection.

Treatment is hydration (with IVs if needed) and one of two oral antibiotics. First : Flagyl (metronidazole); Second : oral vancomycin.

Unfortunately, these are recent reports of C Diff that is resistent to these treatments and require some other VERY powerful antibiotics.
