my son is terrified of the dentist. what should i do to calm him down?
Question:
Answers:
First of all, why did he "see you get fillings?" Young children are usually not allowed in the operatory while adults are being treated.
Obviously, he's had some sort of trauma that caused this irrational fear. There are some safe medications which can make dental visits easier for adults and children who are "high-fears" patients.
Halcion is one - it relaxes the patients and has a slight amnesia effect. After the visit, the patient doesn't remember much if anything about their treatment. It has been tested safe on children and is a good alternative to terrorizing kids.
A general anesthetic, if administered by a certified specialist, is another answer. Children go into a light sleep, and when they awake, all their dental treatment is complete. They don't recall anything and it's much easier for the dentist to work on them.
In my area, there are two board-certified anesthesiologists who are also dentists and work exclusively with children. The patients are closely monitored and the procedure is completely safe.

He's full of crap. Just don't put up with it.
Find a new dentist! It is the dentist's job to assist with calming. If your dentist sucks at that then he got good grades but sucks with people. Maybe he is good with teeth, but teeth AIN'T WHERE IT'S AT! The patient is #1
Also if the dentist is a wizard with a drill, but not with human beings, then he should spend some of his profits on assistants that can assists with human beings. Well, DUH!
How old is he? young I am assuming.
I had this problem too with my 2 boys. Have him watch you get a cleaning and see that it don't hurt. If he's little try putting him on your lap as his teeth are getting cleaned this worked for my boys.
What is his age? If he is big enough to understand, tell him the benefits of going to a dentist. I was terrified of the thought of having braces (metal mouth) for 2 years, but when I thought of the beautiful smile that I would have like celebrities, I faced my fear. Now my teeth is the envy of the college. Try the same with your son. Also make sure your dentist has a way with kids and knows how to distract them during pain. Hope your son will never have a bad tooth day. Good luck
He probably saw the shot, when you went for your filling. Bad move letting him sit in with you..but what can you do? Maybe you should check out the library or a kids movie website or list, and see if there is something about going to the dentist. Also, let him know that its important that he get his teeth checked every 6 months so they can catch any problems Early. Because its not until later (when they get worse) that its painful. GOOD LUCK
Educate him about teeth and dentistry.
get him books and other educational materials
Take him to a dental clinic and show him around.
Preferably take him to a Dentist who has some time for your child, and lot of patience and right attitude.
I think he will be a great patient after all this.
Tie him to the chair.
Get him a portable CD player so he can listen to music while he is getting the work done. The dentist I go to does that for the adults! Or if he has a portable DVD player let him watch a movie during the session. If he wants you in the room insist to the dentist you be allowed in. 14 years ago my mother was not allowed in the room during my dental work and it was very traumatic for me. I actually only started going back to the dentist this year.
Go to a Pediatric Dentist. They specialize in taking care of kids and making the dentist fun.
