I have diabetes and have an ongoing bout with constipation, can you help?

It depends on the kinds of medications you are on. Narcotics can cause constipation problems. Besides diabetes what other medical problems do you have? Do you have renal insufficency? If you do you need to be extra careful about medications.
As a rule the way I treat constipation is with the 3 F's
Fluid, Fiber and Fifteen minutes.
Increase the amount of fluids you drink a day to 8 glasses of water (as long as you do not have congestive heart failure or kidney problems or fluid problems). This help make sure the stool is not dehydrated. That's what makes stool hard. Fiber helps and bulk to your stool and helps your colon move it. Fresh fruits and vegetables are a good source. If unable to eat plenty of them, try fibercon 1-2 tablets with at least 8 ounces of water a day.
Try having a bowel movement about 15 minutes after a meal when you may have the urge to feel like going.
Other medications you can try. As long as you do not have problems with your kidney function you can try magnesium sulfate 8 oz bottle chilled to help clean out your colon or try miralax which is available by prescription.
Have your doctor review your meds and to take you off ones that you may not need that may cause constipation.
Constipation usually does not happen overnight and does not get cured overnight. It takes time and patience. You need to tone up your colon. If you have chronic constipation, your colon has relaxed and gotten used to being full and doesn't get the same stimulus to move things like it used to.

If you are not keeping your diabetes in control that could be the cause of your constipation due to slight dehydration.Drink plenty of water,control your diabetes,eat high fiber foods,substitute whole wheat or white bread.Whole wheat cereal.Exercise.Stewed prunes are helpful.Walking daily will help.A mild stool softener like colace can be brought over the counter.
