It really depends on your goal. Is your goal to build muscle or lose fat? If it's to lose fat, then hands down first thing in the morning is THE best time to increase your metabolism for the rest of the day. It's also important to use fat stores and refrain from using other energy sources (liver glycogen and ingested glucose which can interfere with fat metabolism).
If it's muscle building your after, then it really doesn't matter too much, but there's some consensus in the bodybuilding community to weight train either 3 or 7 hours after your wake up since some studies show growth hormone levels are optimal for training during these periods.

I would say morning or evening. Morning because you just jumpstart your body and boost your fat burning process all day, and plus it is just a good wake up, or evening because you can just kind of work off all of the calories that you have taken in all day. Just remember that even if you are hungry after you leave the gym (which you probably will be) dont let that make you eat right before bed or your little trip to the gym will be kind of pointless.
Afternoon, finish up about 30-45 mins. before you eat dinner, which is the time when you can replace calories and burn them at the same time. If you're feeling sluggish, it's only a matter of getting over that initial hump and then you'll realize that the more energy you use the more you actually can access.

My own experience when I was in the best shape of my life. Working out right after classes then going straight to dinner before my hunger got too out of control where overeating occurs.
