First.. dont starve yourself. good idea. As far as your 6 meals go, make a fist, thats about the half the size of your stomach, so what you do is make sure your meals range from about one fist to two fists large. Even for a big muscle guy like me 6'6 250lbs, thats the rule of thumb I follow.
Let me answer your soda question, NO. Not diet, please not diet thats worse than regular soda.
Jenn what you want is a balanced eating plan. Optimally it will consist of lean meats, raw or minimally processed fruit and vegetables, whole grains, and natural fats. Realistically thats not easy to do. What is easier is a balance, about 50% of your daily intake should be grains, fruits and vegetables, and some sugars. About 25 should be protein intake, lean meats, legumes, dairy. About 25% should be natural fats, like from meat, butter, from dairy.
In general this is what I would advise to start, but I would need more information to be more specific.

Limit your carbs increse your protein. You need to be carefule because most people will cut out their fiber and this is bad. I lost 35 pounds in two months. I drank two protein shakes a day and I ate protein snakes like almonds and beef jerky. One of the best snakes to lose weight is tuna and crakers. I also had one healthy meal. It was the easiest way for me to lose weight. I can tell you if I was hungrey I ate. My portion size on my meal naturaly got smaller.
