Looking to style my hair in a certain way?

Question: I want to know how I style and or cut my hair like the guys in hair bands did. You know, the same curly-ish style as early Metallica? How do I get it like that and what do I use to style it? I'm a girl, but I think that style looks pretty good on chicks.
