Can caffeine enhance melatonin's effects? And how much melatonin is a good easy dose?

Question:
Melatonin is a hormone that can be harmlessly taken in those over the counter synthetic pills, you get what it is.. it helps you sleep!
I heard from a friend that if you first take a few miligrams of melatonin (If I'm having a hard time sleeping I'll take 1-2 miligrams, but sometimes I'll take 4), and then drink some caffeine, the caffeine enhances the melatonin's ability to make you sleepy.
Does anyone know if this is true? I don't take it very often, but when I do take it, is 3-4 mgs detrimental to my health?
