I believe heart disease is basically "chronic scurvey". What do you think?

Question:
I believe that a lack of vitamin C causes small ruptures in the lining of the artery wall and plaque builds up there to prevent you from bleeding to death internally. You end up with problems when too much plaque builds up. Does anyone also believe this theory?

Answers:
That doesn't hold up very well if you look at the diets of most people in the United States. Most of us get more than enough vitamin C. We have lots of foods that are fortified with it. Many of us take a multivitamin or other supplement that contains vitamin C. Yet heart disease is very, very common in this country despite the fact that vitamin C deficiency is very uncommon. While vitamin C deficiency can weaken blood vessels, it would be very rare in this country to have a case of cardiovascular disease caused by vitamin C deficiency.

Other Answers:
No. Hardly anyone in our society has a lack of vitamin C, and some cultures that get far less vitamin C than we do also have less heart disease. The Masai people, in Africa, have hardly any plant foods in their diets at all, and their diets have much less vitamin C than we do. Same with many Asian cultures.

Vitamin C may have some role in preventing heart disease by strengthening the immune system, but your belief that a lack of Vitamin C actually *causes* the disease is almost certainly wrong.

Alot of things can cause heart disease. Alot of it is genetic, lifestyle, people who are not Vit C defficient can and do still have heart attacks. In my case, my heart attacks were caused due to a valve disease. One of my friends died from a heart attack caused because of heart disease brought on by cancer treatment. Heart problems cant be that simply categorized.
