He would most definitely be a small if he likes his sweatshirts fitted, if he likes them a little baggier and loose fitting (like really loose) then go with a medium. But for most people his size a small would be just fine.

sweat shirts are casual clothing or used for exercising so I would go big rather than form fitting. Also, alot of people like the layered look with a t shirt or two underneath the sweat shirt. I would go with Medium at the least and a Large for a little extra comfort.. peace
