Because a lot of smokers are just rude, and feel that they are being "wronged" by society, just because thier smoke is a menace to other people. They do not seem to comprehend that breathing is necessary for life, but smoking is not. They do not comprehend that others are not causing a problem by breathing, but they are by putting thier filth into the air.
I am sure you will hear a lot of smokers whine about how they are "forced" outside and stuff like that, but they are the ones that are too weak to cope with life without their little crutch, so they choose to smoke, therefore "force" themselves outside in those circumstances.

Its bad enough we have to smoke outside in the first place, suck it up and quit whining. try holding your breath for a few seconds if it bothers you that much. or purchase a gas mask.
They probably don't realize that they are standing right in doorway. Or that others are having to walk through the cloud of smoke. I used to smoke years ago and the things I notice now are things that I did and I didn't even realize it until now. Not that I was being rude.
im not rude guess where the places of business place the ashtrays. thats why smokers huddle around them. because having butts everywhere used to be bad so they put them next to the door. so there would not be butts everywhere. now they need to move them to the street side or away from the door.
I know around here, many of them are just too lazy to walk further outside. Especially if it's cold.

I think it's a combination between a) thats where the ashtrays are, and b) it's the warmest spot. Smokers don't like being outside in the cold any more than you do, so they huddle together near the doorway where they can still catch some of the radiant heat.
It really smells for people that do not smoke.Not to mention the bad breath.Pewwwwwwwww when they talk to you.
Probably because smokers have been banned from almost every public location. In most areas, they can not even smoke in bars or nightclubs.
So if you are a smoker, you have to go outside. And especially if it is raining or cold, you do not want to move farther away from the doorway then you have to.
If you have this problem at your workplace, encourage them to build a "smokers area" away from the doorway. We had one at one place I worked. It was walled, and had a heater and seats inside. It let the smokers do their thing, and keep it away from the non-smokers. Sadly, it was closed after a bunch of non-smokers protested that they did not have a similar location. They filed suit that it was a work area that allowed smoking, and it was demolished.
