I developed Type 2 six years ago and started a running regimen. Not your situation, but in the process I developed an athletic heart, and no meds needed ..yet.
I choose running because it developed blood circulation in the legs.

3. Muscualr strength
4. Flexibility

You should do aerobic exercises to increase aerobic endurance.
You should do resistance training to increase muscular endurance and strength.
You should stretch (maybe yoga) to increase flexibility.
You should control your diet and exercise to maintain a body mass index of about 25.
