why do we hickup!?

Question:

Answers:
The diaphragm is the large dome shaped muscle under the lungs that aids in breathing. At times, the diaphragm may become irritated. Similar to a muscle twitch, the diaphragm will start to spasm and contract uncontrollably. With each contraction, air is pulled into the lungs very quickly. The air passes through the larynx, or voice box. The epiglottis closes behind the rush of air, shaking the vocal chords. This shaking makes the familiar "hic" sound.

A spasm of the diaphragm can be caused by many things. Rapid eating, emotional stress and even some diseases can irritate the diaphragm and cause hiccups.

muscle spasms

It is caused by a spasm in the diaphragm. It is also caused by swallowing too much air. That's why drinking water and holding your breath can help.

I will give the shortest and best answer I know on this:

BECAUSE.

I have a theory that perhaps sometimes we get hiccups because our body is trying to slow us down and get us to breathe more evenly. The appear to be caused by an irritation to the diaphragm.

I've noticed that people get them when they are laughing or panting hard or when they have been startled. The article sited below gives a brief explanation and contains link to other articles about hiccups.
