Fluoride: A Little Dab Listen carefully, and you will hear, "Look, Ma, no cavities!" echoing all over the United States these days. A recent study by the National Institute of Dental Research found that dental cavities among children 5 to 17 years old have decreased by 36 percent since 1980. Better yet, nearly half of these children could boast that they had nary a cavity. This steady decline in tooth decay is attributed chiefly to the widespread use of fluoride. But while fluoride in small amounts appears to dramatically reduce the incidence of dental caries, it can be harmful at higher doses.
How does fluoride act to prevent cavities? In two ways: When your child swallows fluoride it is absorbed into the blood stream and is carried to the developing teeth where it is incorporated into the enamel. Also, when fluoride is applied directly to your child's teeth (e.g., in the form of toothpaste, fluoridated water, or solutions used by dentists), it binds to the outer layers of the enamel.
What are the common sources of fluoride to which your child is exposed? Your child receives fluoride from many of the foods she eats, fluids she drinks (particularly if your drinking water contains fluoride), drops or tablets prescribed by your doctor (if your drinking water is not fluoridated), most toothpastes, many brands of mouthwash, and from special solutions applied to the tooth enamel at the dentist's office.

Everyone is hitting on the main reason, because of the flouride, which is harmful in large quanities. The amounts in toothpaste produced in America is not of great concern. However, not all toothpaste sold in America is produced in America and governed under our laws. Particularly some brands sold at dollar stores are produced in other countries and do contain excessive amounts of flouride, which could be harmful. So, be wary of the dollar store toothpaste.
You shouldn't eat toothpaste because almost every brand contains fluoride which is actually poisonous; you should be okay if you don't accidentally swallow too much, but don't eat it.
If you accidentally swallow a little bit, it wouldn't hurt you. But if you're constantly swallowing it it could make you sick because the ingredients aren't meant to be taken internally.
Toothpaste is toxic unless you buy all natural types.
