If no medicine or treatment is taken for acid reflux, can anything worse occur?

Question:
My husband has acid reflux and his doctor prescribed Prevacid for him, he has yet to start taking it though. Other than the awful feeling it causes him, if he leaves it untreated, will anything else inside of him suffer, longterm?

Answers:
Yes, constant acid reflux can cause esophageal and pharyngeal damage that can lead to ulcers, and in some rare instances, cancer or rupture of varicies caused by portal hypertension.

Other Answers:
throat ulcers and eventually cancer

Yes. It can permanently erode his esophagus. Why isn't he taking the medicine? He will feel so much better and be able to eat anything. There is no way I would go without my acid reflux meds.

Esophageal disease can occur. It will not cause cancer as was previously stated. The pain of the eroding tissue will be increasingly stronger and present longer.
