You get herpes through having sex with an infected person - even if the person is not having a break out. It can also be passed orally.ie. if you have a cold sore do not provide oral sex to your partner! It could happen..my mother in law (a nurse) informed me of this once when I had a cold sore.basically she was telling me not to give oral sex to my husband, her son! How humiliating. :-P
