One is like regular hair perm solution that you just keep combing through the hair and the other is a product containing lye (very hard on the hair and a person can easily burn their scalp). Straighting should be should be done by a professional as not to damage her hair (breakage). You did not mention the texture of your cousin's hair, better to leave it to an expert.

I WOULD SAY I I GOT MY FIRST ONE AT 12 YEARS OLD. IT IS BAD WHEN YOU DO IT ON KIDS THAT ARE YOUNGER THAN 6 BECAUSE THE HAIR IS STILL GROWING. BY THE TIME KIDS HIT TEENAGE YEARS THE MAJOR GROWING OF THE HAIR HAS SLOWED. SO 12 YEARS OLD IS ABOUT RIGHT. AND MAKE SURE YOU FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS FULLY SO THERE IS NO DAMAGE TO THE HAIR.
