The calories burned is determined by the distrance traveled. For ex., it may take you 20 minutes to walk a mile and only 10 to run it, but you'll burn the same amount of calories. Running just gets the job done faster. Running is hard on your joints, but it is also excellent for your cardiovascualar health. My advice to you is walk and gradually build some running into your routine to avoid injury. Sprinting is an anaerobic work out. It doesn't burn calories so much as it builds muscle, but muscle tone and definition are good, it that's a goal of yours.

Running is the best way to lose inches, but it is very hard on your joints, (it leads to arthritis). Power walking acomplishes the same thing as running or jogging, but is easier on your body. As long as you get your heart rate up, you burn calories. If you really want a good work out to lose mega inches and weight, combine 45 minutes of power walking with a 15 minute shiatsu ball workout. I dropped 5 sizes in 1 month doing that rutine 3-4 times a week while watching my calories, fat and carbs. Also water is essential for weight loss. Drinking cranberry juice as a supplement helps too, since it gets your urinary tract work up to par to get rid of excess water weight.

go to a gym, and look at the weight of the walkers vs. the runners. the runners are WAY thinner. case closed.

For me personally I am extremely out of shape and have exercise induced asthma so I usually walk versus run. I do like to jog for a few minutes from time to time though.
