how common are heart arrytmias in women?
Question:

I had this too, so i went to my doctor who sent me to get the 24 hour monitor attached to my chest. It turned out to be ectopic heart beats, i have tablets for it, i don't need to take them really but it stops me feeling the missed beats which is what i didn't like. I was told not to worry about it, but when it's your heart you do worry. The only time i feel it now is when I'm really tired. Don't be afraid, go to the doctors and get it checked. I'm 43 and I've had it for about 10 years. Being overweight doesn't help either, so if you are then try losing a bit. Hope this is of use to you.

It depends on your age..caffeine can cause the symptoms you are talking about, if you're otherwise healthy just cut back on the caffeine intake and that will probably subside. If you have other medical conditions or are 40+ you should probably see a doctor.
There exist gender differences in the frequency of the various forms of cardiac arrhythmias. Atrial fibrillation is more common in man in whom it is often a complication of coronary heart disease. Numerous elderly women however present with this rhythm disorder which is often a complication of congestive heart failure or valvular heart disease. Atrial fibrillation carries a high risk of cerebro-vascular embolic accident in female. Symptomatic supraventricular tachycardia and the long QT syndrome, inherited or acquired, are more frequent among women. The latter are also particularly susceptible to develop torsade de pointe as a consequence of therapy with drugs interfering with the potassium ion channels. Sudden cardiac death is more frequent in men than in women even when the latter suffer from coronary heart disease. Sudden cardiac death without structural heart disease is however more frequently seen in women. Nulliparity, tobacco use and alcoholism might be specific risk factors for sudden cardiac death in female. Cardiac arrhythmias may be seen during pregnancy. New onset or aggravated supraventricular tachycardia may be encountered during that period. Ventricular tachycardia in the absence of structural heart disease may also be seen during pregnancy. The treatment of cardiac arrhythmias in pregnant woman remains a challenge for the practising cardiologist.
You need to go and see a local cardiologist and get an ekg done just to check and make sure things are ok!
If you're young these are most likely nothing more than premature atrial contractions (PAC's). Everybody gets them now and then. Women tend to notice them more than men. It is possible it could be something more though. You probably should see your doctor so they can do an EKG and Holter monitor. This way they can see if it's anything to worry about. If everything is cool but it still bothers you, they can give you a Beta blocker to basically control the symptoms. They might also want to do an Echocardiogram. Sometimes women that have these symptoms could also have Mitral Valve Prolapse. Still, not that big a deal unless it's severe.
I was having wierd heartbeats that I could feel fairly often. I started to get nervous about this and that made it worse. The stress of worrying about the occasional skipped heartbeat or quiver caused it to happen more often. I went in and they did an EKG and picked up an arrythmia. I then went in for an ultrasound of my heart and wore a Holter Monitor for 24 hours. The ultrasound showed a heart murmer that is completely unrelated to the skipped beats. They did find I have an irregular heartbeat, but said not to worry about it that everything looked fine. They said stress alone can cause this to happen and the more you focus on it, the worse you will make it feel. Try to relax. If it keeps happening, go get it checked out so you can make your mind feel at ease. It is probably nothing to worry about, but the testing is pretty easy and was all done within a week.
I also have missed beats and fluttering, and yes this can be very worrying.Go to your,e doctors and explain what is going on.My results came back normal and my palpitations are put down to stress, but always get yourself checked out just to be sure.
