What is the renal cortex measurement in ultrasound?

Question:

Answers:
When we do a renal ultrasound on a patient, in the facility where I work, we measure the renal cortex thickness. To tell you the truth, I have no idea what it means if it is too thick. If it is too thin, usually that means that the kidney's collection structures are dilated, which is called hydronephrosis. This is a sign of obstruction. At the following link, you can see ultrasound images of a dilated kidney. The area between the black (fluid) in the middle of the kidney and the outer edge of the kidney is the renal cortex.

The renal cortex is the outer portion of the kidney between the renal capsule and the renal medulla. It forms a continuous smooth outer zone in the adult which extends down between the pyramids. It contains the renal corpuscles and the renal tubules except for parts of the loop of Henle which descend into the renal medulla. It also contains blood vessels and cortical collecting ducts.

Other Answers:
The renal cortex is the outer part of the substance of the kidney. Wouldn't the measurement be different on each kidney during ultrasound for each fetuses gestational age?
