Can a person detect when they will develop Ketoacidosis?
Question:
Answers:
You can not detect when you will get it. You can know the things that will lead to it..those are the things that will make your sugars go too high for too long.generaly people will begin to feel tired / thirsty and urinating alot. It is all the same disease.sugars getting out of hand. We say you develop the acidosis based on the lab results.this is how it is known that you are no longer using sugar for energy but rather fats. The use of these fats for energy leads to the by-product we call ketoacids. You can't know they are there but you should see it coming as part of the whole sugars out of control picture. The number one problem leading to DKA is non-compliance with diet and meds. Stressed out.overworked.infections.. and anything else that puts stress on you will bring it on. Alot of people find out they have DM when go to the hospital with DKA.usually a young man or woman.

Ketoacidosis in diabetes will develope due to 1. Inadequate insulin therapy 2. Infection like urinary or lung infections 3. drugs like cocaine The symptoms you will experience are nausea, vomiting, thirst, polyuria, abdominal pain, shortness of breath, increased heart rate or respiratory rate, experiencing fruity odor in own breath.
Ketoacidosis, the diabetic kind, is a dangerous out-of-control condition in people who are processing fat as fuel. It's normal to use fat as fuel sometimes, and that doesn't cause problems. DKA is an aberration of this normal process.
DKA is more common amongst Type 1 diabetics for reasons which are not qutie clear, and can be triggered by a number of things. Among them is stress, improper amounts or timing of medications (most commonly insulin), infection, trauma, . Some of these are predictable, some are not. The predictable ones can be, to some extent, evaded by taking more care with regard to eating, insulin timing and amounts, etc. The others can't, of course.
How can one detect when DKA is beginning? The characteristic sign of DKA is an elevated level of 'ketone bodies' which are three chemicals (only one a ketone, actually). They are the cause of the acidification of the blood, and their excessive production is the aberration of fat metabolism which is the origin of DKA. Elevated rates can be detected, often in time to do something about it without much fuss, by using keone test strips (for urine), which can detect abnormal levels. As the degree of DKA progresses to dangerous levels, one of the ketone bodies (acetone) begins to be detectable in the breath. One smells somewhat like fingernail polish remover which usually contains acetone. However, by that time, DKA is well advanced and requires immediate emergency medical attention.
DKA is very dangerous, and if advanced at all, is a clear medical emergency. It cannot be reasonably treated at home, or without lab tests normally available only in hospitals and clinics. It is nothing to take casually nor to dither about. Any significatn symptoms (eg, acetone breath, vomiting, etc) are fuly justifiable cause to head straight to the closest emergency medical facility.
