How do they calculate life expectancy?
When the newspapers publish numbers that the life expectancy for females in the US is 79 and for males it is 76, how do they calculate that? If it is an average length of time that people live, does this take into account infant mortality?

Right off the top of my head (meaning I'm probably wrong), I think it might be calculated as the average age of those who die from non-accidental means. Thus, infant mortality is probably a factor.
