How do you figure out how much sleep you NEED?


Before I retired, I definitely didn't get enough sleep - I was falling asleep whenever I got a chance to sit down. But now that I'm retired, I think I may sleep too much.

This is more of a medical question which only your doctor can answer. Personally, my problem was sleep apnia. I was unaware that I was awakening every few minutes. They discovered this at a sleep clinic, and I now use what they call a "CPAP" machine when I sleep. I now sleep very well and do not need as much sleep as I had thought.

im 13 and i weigh about 130 punds. i try dieting and exercising. it doesnt work what should i do?

I think ur body would tell u how much sleep u need. Personally, I need 8hrs, atleast. I can survive on six or seven some nights, but I can't do it consecutively, because my body will make me make up the difference on later days. I think doctors say one should be fine on six to 8 hrs sleep if ur an adult. I do understand why u feel u sleep too much now, but back when u worked, u felt that u couldn't wait for a nap--I'm guessing u woke early, and went to bed reasonably early. I'm also assuming that u had a scheduled work day, so ur life was pretty regimented. If this is the case, u don't have that "timetable" in ur life any more, so u probably feel like a bum if u sleep 10 min past the time u used to get up, or the time u figure u should be up.
