Yes, I do know about this STD. In fact, I'd like to crlafiy some points made by the asker.

1. The Kaiser Family Foundation in conjunction with the Alan Guttmacher Institute peg the prevalence around 70% (not 80%), with about 4.5 million new cases per year (most in teenagers!)

2. HPV does not equal genital warts. HPV causes more than warts. Cervical cancer is the biggie (and a major cause of worldwide morbidity and female mortality), but it can also cause penile and anal cancer (depending on which sites get inoculated.

3. Many people pick up the infection then clear it.

4. The Pap Smear does NOT test for HPV directly, but detects the sort of abnormalities that would be caused by HPV infection. If a Pap Smear comes back abnormal, then HPV tests are run. There is NOT a clinical test available for men. HPV testing for men is only done in the context of major research studies (like for vaccines and stuff).

5. Only 1% of people infected with wart-causing strains of HPV get warts.

6. HPV is transmitted via skin-to-skin contact. This means you can get it without penetration (i.e., dry humping). Condoms aren't totally effective against HPV, but they are much better than no protection at all!

7. A vaccine is in the tail end of clinical trials. It should be available within the next year or so. HOWEVER, because so many people pick HPV up when they're young, it's best to administer the vax to people when they're about eleven years old (BEFORE they have any sexual contact whatsoever).
