Bird flu is not normally transmitted to people. Unless you are having prolonged direct contact with contaminated birds (eg. poultry catcher in an affected country - of which Canada and the U.S. are not at this point), you are okay. If you do have that kind of contact, and are working in a country where avian (bird) flu outbreaks have been declared, a surgical or procedure mask is necessary.
If and when the bird flu transforms into a human influenza virus that becomes able to move from one human to another (eg. pandemic influenza affecting the whole world), again a surgical or procedure mask is good. N95 is not necessary because the influenza virus is a droplet spread bug and not an airborne bug. This is according to the CDC, WHO and the Canadian infectious diseases experts.
