What is causing this arm numbness at night?

My mom goes to sleep at night with her arms up under her pillow and under her head and she wakes up multiple times with her arms asleep. She's 47. Is this normal or could it be more serious? She said it didn't use to do this.

Pinched nerves or how she is placing her arms when she sleeps. This is caused by lack of blood in area.

what is osteoprosis?

it sounds like she is cutting the circulation off in her arms while she is sleeping. If she has gained weight that could be the problem or it could just be like I said the way she is sleeping. If it happening during the day while moving around I would go see a doctor. Could be like a pinched nerve.

why this happens?

Could be carpal tunnel syndrome if it is in the wrist and forearm. One of the symptoms of this is having it wake you in the night. Is she having pain as well as numbness? Any problems with her hands, as far as grip strength goes? Does she do any kind of repetitive motions at work or home, as in computer work, piecework in a factory, or sewing/quilting? Is the problem worse in one arm or is it equal in both?
