Can people with RA work? If so, what type of work can they do?

Question:

Answers:
Wiki says that after 5 yrs, 1/3 of patients with RA will be disabled. However, I wouldn't always trust Wiki. These stats are likely outdated. If people are diagnosed early and treated with effective drugs (DMARDs or the new biologics, which many believe slow damage of RA) then it is quite possible to be fully functioning. It depends on the severity and the joints affected.

I was diagnosed with RA one year ago, and am in law school. I don't anticipate it ever keeping me from work, but it may slow down my typing a bit. If someone has a physically demanding job, it is a lot less likely that they will be able to continue with that particular line of work. Many people are still disabled by RA, but things are improving.

Check out arthritis.org at the "RA Connect" page - they have a full board of people with RA discussing all sorts of problems, many living full lives, with a few challenges along the way.

It depends on the severity of the disease. Most people who are able to manage it can work and do any kind of work. I have a friend with RA that is a nurse, but she has limited problems with her condition. It is basically something that depends on the person and advancement of disorder.

It depends on how much involvement they have. The question would be best answered by the person suffering with it. How much is the usage of their joints limited by the arthritis?
