I'm a runner of 8 yrs. but the arch of my foot hurts now. I've always had running shoes but why now?

You have a condition called plantar fasciitis. The condition causes the heel to hurt, feel hot or swell. It is basically inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thin layer of tough tissue supporting the arch of the foot. Repeated microscopic tears of the plantar fascia cause pain. Sometimes plantar fasciitis is called "heel spurs", but this is not always accurate, since bony growths on the heel may or may not be a factor.
You need to seek therapy and refrain from running until your condition stabilizes. Use ice under acute circumstances and massage therapy can be benefical aftera few days of ice treatment. Roll your foot longitudinally back and forth on a tennis ball to help stretch the plantar fascia (you can do this at the office or at home)

The above answer is right on (most likely). I had this, and it took about a YEAR to go away. Don't delay, get to a sports med. doctor now!
Most likely FitGuy is right. If the pain is up in your arch and not towards your heel, it could be something simple like your new brand of running shoes is not giving your arch enough support. Even if you run in the same brand and model year after year, the manufacturer will make small changes and they may not be the same fit you were buying 5 years ago. Make sure you aren't putting too many miles on your shoes either. You should still go to the doctor and let them determine if your fascia is indeed injured. Doctors are quick to blame running injuries in the foot on plantar fasciitis when something else is the culprit. I once had achilles tendonitis and the doc tried to say it was the fascia. Now I only let my physical therapist say for sure. Good Luck and get it looked at.
