What is Haffnia alvei? Is it a common cause of cystitis? How is it acquired?
How can I teach employees about infection control without giving them alot of reading materials?
Answers:
Hafnia alvei is a bacteria normally found in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Only rarely has it been thought to cause disease. I have never heard of it causing cystitis, but it may be possible.
The most common cause of cystitis is E. coli. Usually E. coli from your GI tract finds its way to the urinary tract. Normally when you urinate the bacteria are flushed out but sometimes they are not. Some E. coli have a mechanism by which they can adhere to the lining of the urinary tract and cause infection.
Like E. coli, H. alvei has been reported to cause diarrhea, but these cases have been viewed with some skepticism. It has also been implicated in cases of pneumonia and abscess of liver, muscle and abdomenal cavity.
I am not sure if H. alvei have the same mechanisms to adhere to the lining of the blatter or not although I doubt it. Studies have shown the H. alvei is related to E. coli however so it may be possible.
If the patient had an indwelling catheter like a Foley catheter the "flushing" mechanism does not work as well and the patient is more susceptible to infection. If H. alvei got into the blatter and could not be cleared because of a Foley catheter then it is easy to see how this could cause infection.
Still when I search the liturature I found no referance to H. alvei causing cystitis.
Hope that helped.
