How do I know if I am getting ripped off by my dentist?

I am seeing a dentist in E. Setauket, NY. $16.000 paid up front. I am very confused and after spending $500 for consultation, then sent to another dentist for gum and bone loss verification which cost $500. he is making me two bridges and I have to get 12 teeth pulled from another oral surgeon. I am at a loss.

Get a second opinion. I am assuming, from what you've typed, you have a perio (gum) problem?? With a large amount of money coming from extracting failing teeth and having bridges and or implants placed. It doesn't hurt to have another opinion and or even two treatment options.

I know if you have a consultation with an Oral Surgen or Periodonist, you will have to pay a conultation fee. These are specialty practices. Usually if you have help with insurance, they cover it. However, if the office has a fee for service policy, you must pay them and be reimburst by your insurance company.

I have heard of dentist requesting fees for larger cases be paid up front. It's becoming more common.
A lawyer will do you no good, but cost you additional money. Get a second opinion and go from there.
Go in as if you've had no treatment planned, see what they say. That way they have no influence on your treatment plan either way. Hope this helps.

It sounds like a lot, maybe you should ask another dentist for a consult. Do you also have to pay the oral surgeon? It really sounds like they are ripping you off, why do you need 12 extractions? I would go to a different dentist.
