can you tell me about eye aneurysms?

my sister's eye has drooped a little as she got older (she's 23 now), and going to the doctor, he informed her it might be an aneurysm. i havent been able to find much information on aneurysms in the eye area, so i was hoping someone could help. what i have read so far, suggests that aneurysms come with a certain amount of pain, however, i have never heard of her complaining about pain.

can someone tell me about the characteristics of eye aneurysms? if she does have an eye aneurysm, in her case, could it really be fatal, if she doesnt correct it soon? can it be corrected at all?

Answers:
An aneurysm is a bulging out of the wall of a blood vessel. If your sister has an aneurysm, it probably means that one of the arteries on the bottom-front of her brain is pushing against one of the nerves that controls the eye. For example, it is possible for an aneurysm of the posterior communicating artery to impinge on the oculomoter nerve, causing ptosis (drooping). An aneurysm here could be completely painless.

Based on the eye symptom alone, an aneurysm wouldn't be my first guess. If the doctor is really concerned about it, he can order some imaging studies to check out the vessels. Best of luck to you :)

Response to CaliDoc -- I'm sorry if you misunderstood me, I thought I was clear in saying that an aneurysm was very possible and a workup appropriate, despite the lack of headaches she was worried about. I also cautioned that it might not be first in my differential given her age. She's only 23 now, and has had it for some time apparently. Maybe she is morbidly obese and hypertensive, that would change the picture for me. I'm sure you know that people around these boards google their symptoms and convince themselves they have anthrax. Just a dose of moderation.

As for my tag, I think it tells the story pretty clearly. You knew I was a med student from my handle alone. My experience is limited and I basically wear that on my avatar. I still am much more equipped than the litany of lay people that populate these boards. Nevertheless, I'll try to keep in mind the utility of a disclaimer from now on :) Now take it easy on the med students, we have it pretty tough.

It sounds like your sister's aneurysm might be in the brain and affecting the nerves that control some of the eye muscles. The severity of aneurysms can vary, so your sister (and you) should discuss your questions with her doctor. Only he/she will know the answers that pertain specifically to your sister's case.

StudentMD, you are out of line saying that aneurysm would not be your first guess. You should learn medicine.you should not be answering medical questions. Although they shouldn't, people reading these boards take action based on some of the things they read, and if you put MD in your name, some people will take your advice too seriously.

Sudden onset of ptosis in a young person COULD be an aneurysm or it could be another neurologic disease (like MS). In either case, she needs a full workup and treatment.

I wish the asker of this question (and her sis) the best!~
