what would be a reason, besides pregnancy, that i would be skipping several menstral cycles?

There are quite a few possibilities. This does happen to some women on a regular basis. If this is typical for you, and you've mentioned it to your gyne in prior visits, I wouldn't be overly concerned.
However, if this is new for you, or you're experiencing different symptoms (like an increase/decrease in flow, spotting, increased cramping), then I would suggest going to your doctor to make sure everything's ok. It may just be your body going through a change, or reacting to stress, but it's always good to get checked out to be safe.
Also, I would suggest taking the pregnancy test to rule that out. Nothing is 100% (except if you're not having sex at all), even condoms, the pill, or tubal ligation.

Hormonal imbalance, menopause, tumor or illness..
See your gynocologist unless you know you are going through menopause (and then isn't a bad idea either).
Stress, eating disorders can also affect periods.
if you have been under alot of stress latly that may cause you not to get your monthly cycles.
