Irritated skin reaction to 50mg Androderm patches?

Question:
I used Androgel for 2 years, and switched to the Androderm patches 4 weeks ago. The first 2 weeks all went smoothly. Then the skin was bright red, burning and itchy when the patch was removed after the 24hour period. Hydrocortisone cream is recommended. Has little effect. Takes about 10 days to 2 weeks for the skin to clear. The patches work much better, otherwise, than the gel. Any suggestions for healing or perhaps using the patches less than every day? I'd really prefer the patches if this problem can be overcome. And I do not use the patch in the same place twice.

Answers:
I would talk to your doctor about this one.

You could be having a reaction to either the medication or to something simple such as an allergy to latex that might be in the adhesive part of the patch.

It is best to get it checked by your physician.

I am a CMA, and used to work in Dermatology. Sounds like an adhesive allergy. There really isn't a way around this one. I'd be willing to bet you have the same reaction if you leave a bandaid on for a long period of time as well. I'd say talk to your dr's, and find a happy medium that you are happy with, without itching to death :)

a very common reaction to the patches and probably the major contraindication to their use.

You will have to go back to the gel or try another alternative - sadly the patch technology will not work for you. Do not keep trying the patches as your skin will become sensitised to other materials as well.
