I have a Mirena IUD and I love mine! The first month I got it, I have really bad cramps, but after that, I was fine. My periods are very light now, I don't have cramps, my periods last 3 days, and best of all, I don't have to worry about becoming pregnant! : ) My Dr. didn't inform me of any serious complication.I haven't had any. I had my IUD put in Nov. 05.
There's lots of info. on their website. www.mirena.com

The only serious complication of the Mirena IUD is that there's a 1 in 1000 chance that the uterus will be perforated during insertion.
