i need to loose 40 pounds. i am adding weight training. how much and how often should i lift the weights?

This will ultimately help your lose weight. The more muscle you develop the higher your basal metabolic rate will be. Simply put the more muscle you have the more calories they will need to sustain themselves. You will burn more calories at rest this way. If you would like to increase your strength you should try increasing the weight and lowering your reps.

Three times a week, and vary your routine so your muscles won't get in a rut. Really! A fitness show said if you work arms, legs, then abs you should work legs, abs then arms. Mix up your order of doing things to see maximum results. LOL!

You should lift enough if any given exercise that you can barely complete the last rep in a 8-12 rep set, a point called muscle failure.
I disagree with the first poster about toning. It's true that you may gain weight with higher weight/lower reps, but it's muscle mass you're adding to your frame, which will increase your resting metabolism, and ultimately help you lose weight.
Always give yourself a day off from working the same muscle groups. It's okay to do resistance training every day if you're alternating muscle groups, and from what I've read it is okay to work your abs daily.
