I had one in 2003 but it was put in after I slipped into a coma. All I remember is it hurt like heck coming back out.

A thin tube is passed up your nose and down into your throat and into your stomach. You are awake when they do this because you have to keep swallowing it in order to guide in into your stomach, if you are put out, it is libel to go down into air way. It's not a pleasant procedure.
