How sereous is the risk of tetnis/(infecti. in general) when you get injured by a rusty piece of metal?

Question:
About 40 minutes ago I found myself snagged on a small maybe 1 cm long offshoot of a rusty metal cable hanging from the bottom of an overhanging barge dock. It was a very small piece of wire perhaps 1 cm long and 24 gauge or so. however the area is not very sanitary and there is rust everywhere. Can anyone provide information on the risk factors of contracting an infection in this case?

Answers:
Tetanus can be deadly. No joke. Go to the emergency department to get evaluated. Now. ESPECIALLY if you can't recall the last time you had a tetanus booster. Not trying to scare you, I just don't want you to blow it off, or just put a "band-aid" on it.

Don't even wait to read the link. It's a PDF file, print it out and read it ON YOUR WAY to the Emergency Dept.

Other Answers:
Um.if you put a bandade on it, very small, but likely, depends on if you put the bandaid on good, and if its good bandaid. And you should switch it ever so often.

The word is TETANUS. Here is what the Mayo Clinic has to say:

Hope that guy followed your instructions, globalmedops.
