The term slipskin, which is used by morticians and funeral homes, what does it mean?

Question:
How and or why does it occur to deceased bodies? We recently experrienced the loss of a stillborn baby. The baby had red pockets and patches over the entire body and face. We were told that we could not have an open coffin because of the condition . slipskin. Any information?

Answers:
First, you have our sympathy on your loss.
The actual term is skin slip.
Several factors are at work here. Since the baby's death took place before birth, temperature in the womb would be relatively warm. That, and the thinness of the skin would lead to rapid breakdown of the surface.
It is unfortunate that this prevented you from viewing your child, but it is not something that could have been prevented.
